While I was at film school, I was surrounded by classmates that were heavily inspired to be in the industry by these incredible directors like Tarantino, Spielberg, Scorses and there I was sitting in the corner embarrassed because the influence that lead me to pursuing a career in the film industry was the television show Castle. Now I’m a massive fangirl for a lot of shows (and I do mean a lot!), ask me trivia questions about Friends, Community, The Office and Parks & Rec and I will beat your pants off, but that doesn’t even come close to my love for Castle.
It’s taken me a long time to not be embarrassed by how much Castle has affected my life and my creative ambitions. It’s something that I tried to express with my Major Project "Shipping Anonymous", a mockumentry pilot about crazy fans (Written, directed, produced and edited – Currently screening at three American Festivals). I thought I had an understanding of how hard is to make tv pilots, but making that project, I realised how much I have to learn before I will become the kind of film director and screenwriter I want to be.
One day I hope that I can be as great a show runner as Andrew Marlowe, he is very protective about the integrity of his story, both for the characters and for the fans. He believed that when the characters get together, it’s not the end of the story it’s only beginning. If one day, a long long long time in the future I can make one person feel 10% of the passion and love I feel for Castle, for something that I have created then I will have surpassed my greatest expectations.
Although the dream is to one day work in a television writers room, for where I am in my career and what is available to me here in Australia I believe that it will be a more fruitful endeveor to spend the next few years developing contained small budget features.
